Cuban percussionist and singer Pedrito Martinez leads a high-voltage ensemble whose main mission is to raise the roof and share in the pure joy of making music. A go-to percussionist for some of the world’s leading musicians, he has collaborated with Paul Simon, Eddie Palmieri, Sting, Wynton Marsalis, and many more. With his own band, Martinez showcases the latest sounds from Cuba, transforming any venue into a lively Havana nightclub in a wave of infectious energy.

Mother Hips

Formed in Chico, CA, in 1991, earthy pop jam rockers, the Mother Hips have attained legendary status in Northern California for their high energy live shows and tuneful compositions. With tight harmonies and country-tinged melodies honoring California's musical past—from Merle Haggard to the Beach Boys to Neil Young, the band has carved its own unique niche in the musical landscape. Celebrating the release of their first new album in many years, the band will perform a special acoustic set followed by a trademark, raucous electric set.

McCrone Honors Reception

The 2018 McCrone Honors Reception will recognize three outstanding HSU professors and one graduate student researcher. The event consists of short research presentations, awards, and light appetizers.

Background: Humboldt State University established the Alistair and Judith McCrone Graduate Fellowship Fund in October 2001. The fund was created to honor Dr. and Mrs. McCrone, who together shepherded Humboldt State University and its students for over a quarter of a century. Their award recognizes one outstanding graduate student, acknowledges their potential, and encourages their continued achievement in their graduate program.

In addition, the outstanding professor awards will recognize HSU’s newer faculty, acknowledge their potential in their field of research, and encourage their continued achievement.

If you’re interested in presenting, registration for ideaFest 2018 will open in October! The deadline to register will be later in March 2018. And we hope you'll also consider publishing your poster on Humboldt Digital Scholar and a research paper in the ideaFest Journal.

Combining technical precision, power, and passion, Complexions Contemporary Ballet transcends tradition in a groundbreaking mix of styles ranging from ballet to hip hop. Founded by former members of Alvin Ailey, Desmond Richardson and Dwight Rhoden, the company has been featured several times on the hit show So You Think You Can Dance. The company brings an exhilarating program to Arcata set to music from Bach to Bowie. Star Dust is an “utterly transfixing” tribute to the life and music of David Bowie, full of glitter and glam.

In a rare father-and-son collaboration, Toumani Diabaté, a genius of African music and widely recognized as the greatest living kora player, joins forces with his son Sidiki, the instrument’s emerging star. Descended from a line of griots—custodians of the ancient oral traditions of West Africa’s Mandé people stretching back seven hundred years—the names Toumani and Sidiki are legendary in the annals of African music.

With a demented sense of humor, “Mr. Dave” effortlessly performs on an amazing arsenal of instruments—from the Hawaiian lap steel guitar and Turkish saz to the Middle Eastern oud and Irish bouzouki. Renowned for its athleticism and theatrical flair, Yamato delivers an explosive, high-energy performance. Hailing from Nara, Japan, these taiko masters combine riveting musicianship and movement with evocatively designed costumes and a huge assortment of instruments. In their new production Chousensha (“The Challengers”), the artists relate overcoming obstacles by challenging their own limits physically and rhythmically, breathing new life into traditional musical forms.
