Classes, jobs and other responsibilities can be a lot for one student to manage. You can relieve some of those burdens in a fun, interesting way, however. Join a club! 

A club is a great way to meet people that share your passion, hobby or craft. Clubs are low-stress:  because you’re not in a class, you are not being graded or assessed, and there is no competition involved except friendly competition.  There is no test at the end of the semester. In fact, clubs do not end after one semester but continue throughout the year. They are also flexible within your schedule. Attend all the meetings, attend some of the meetings, it is up to you. 

Moreover, when you are part of a club, it may involve traveling. Some clubs travel around the state, or even out of state. Nico Townsend, a History major, and a member of the history club, recently traveled with the club to San Francisco. Their activities while there included visits to museums and lectures.  “I really enjoyed my time there, many interesting panels and I got to see much of San Francisco,” Townsend said.

Cal Poly Humboldt has a large selection of clubs. These range from a club encouraging foraging for mushrooms in the forest to archery, to the Circus club! 

Clubs can organize events and even have the potential of getting your favorite artist, author or creator to appear.  Sadie Neff, an Anthropology major and co-president of the Anthropology club organized a guest speaker event. Neff brought to the campus Dr. Paulette Steeves, an Indigenous Archeologist. The inspiration for this event came after Neff read her book for a class final, titled “The Indigenous Paleolithic of the Western Hemisphere.”  The lecture, “Indigenous Archeology & Pyroepistemology: Reclaiming and Reviving Deep Indigenous History” was held via Zoom in the Library’s Fishbowl. 

Neff said, “I emailed Dr. Steeves and expected her to get back to me in a couple months, but she got back to me within 5 minutes. That’s like my happiest experience." 

Kianna Znika, a Journalism student said,  “I initially joined the KRFH Radio Club because I love music and dream of working in the industry. I knew it was the one thing I really wanted to do on campus, and it still is my favorite part of my college career.”  Znika added, “My favorite part of being in a club is being surrounded by people who are just as passionate as me. I've found a community of people who care about the same things I do and who keep me motivated and inspired. It's important to have fun and find a community while in college. It doesn't have to be all work, all the time.” 

Susana Rodriguez, a Senior majoring in Studio Art, has been in the volleyball club since the Spring of 2023. “I joined to keep myself connected to a sport I love and create networking opportunities with fellow athletes.  I enjoy the safe environment created with the other girls and the support of the club. It is a space I can have where my studies and the stress of life do not come in and I am focused on the sport.”  

She concluded, “I would highly recommend the club to other students who are interested in participating in a physical sport, want to be social and get to know other students from the school. Along with being able to be a part of a community of supporting students who also have the same journey of getting their degree!”
