Model UN Team Competes in New York
The Cal Poly Humboldt Model United Nations team returned from competing at the National Model United Nations conference in New York, where they were recognized as a Distinguished Delegation for outstanding conference performance. Students attending the conference were Ashley Calkins, Sawyer Chrisman, Madison Henderson, Cruz Lopez, Joy Mehn, Veronica Patton, Delaney Schroeder-Echavarria, and Amanda Vollema.
More than 2,000 students completed from nearly 120 colleges and universities from around the world, and earning the award meant that Humboldt placed in the top 20% of schools at the conference.
During the National Model United Nations conference, each school is assigned a country to represent as they negotiate and develop solutions to contemporary global issues from their country's perspective. This year, Humboldt represented Guinea-Bissau.
Students in Model United Nations will compete at their final conference of the year--Model United Nations of the Far West--next week, where they will be representing Algeria, Ethiopia, and Malta. Wonderful news! Good luck to Noah Zerbe and then entire Cal Poly Humboldt Model UN Team!

There are only three more performances. Tonight and tomorrow night at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 2pm in the Van Duzer Theatre. There will be 10 pieces in this show. 6 student choreographers will be featured; Miriam Allen, Xennia Arid Avendaño, Alli Bush, Autumn Cry-Mark, Bella Virgen, and Elaina Wargala.
Along with student choreographers there will be 3 faculty choreographers. Kyleigh Brine, Linda Maxwell, and Carrie Walpole.
Kyleigh Brine, co-director of the show, and a faculty choreographer will also debut her choreography. “This is my first year in my new position as an Assistant Professor of Dance at Cal Poly Humboldt and first time Co-Directing the Spring Dance Concert Dance Visions with Faculty Member Carrie Walpole.”
“Dance Visions is an annual production organized by students enrolled in Dance 489, Dance Production. This dance concert features new student and faculty choreographic works in the styles of Ballet, Contemporary, Hip-Hop, Jazz and Tap. I personally have choreographed two new works for this show, on the backs of hardworking women and LOVE. on the backs of hardworking women, is a contemporary solo double cast on two students, Alli Bush and Thi Samelson, and is inspired by a personal story of mine where a man received credit for plagiarizing my work and uses jackets to represent the invisible burden that women often feel throughout their lives. LOVE is an upbeat tap trio set to music by Nat King Kole created to celebrate love and dance for entertainment's sake.”
“I am most excited to finally see all of the pieces take shape onstage- producing a dance concert requires an immense amount of organization, creativity and collaboration. As directors, Carrie and I are so proud of the dedication and commitment to the artistic process by everyone involved and I am so excited for the audience to see the culmination of those efforts. I believe that dance possesses the ability to communicate in a universal language and our hope is that you leave the show inspired by the stories shared kinesthetically.”
Come out and support the students and faculty that worked hard to make this show come alive in front of us.
